Like the Indian Linguistic area…Indian Army too is equally endowed with a variety of people in its rank and file. Indian Army regiments, most of which were formed by the British, were based on community or linguistic lines till recently…a look at their different mottos and war cries tells us a fascinating story about the special relationship the languages and the Indian forces share together!

Brigade of the Guards: Motto: Pahla Hamesha Pahla (Ahead Always Ahead). War Cry: Garud Ka Hun Bol Pyare (I am from the Guards, Say O Friend).

Prarachute Regiment Motto: Shatrujeet (The Conqueror).

Mechanized Infantry: War Cry: Bol Bharat Mata Ki Jai (Say Victory to Mother India).

Punjab Regiment: Motto: Sthal Wa Jal (By Land and Sea). War Cry: Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal (He who cries God is Truth, is Ever Happy). Bol Jawala Ma Ki Jai (Say Victory to Goddess Jawala).

Madras Regiment: Motto: Swadharme Nidhanam Shreyaha (It is a glory to die doing one’s duty). War Cry: Veer Madrasi, Adi Kollu, Adi Kollu (Brave Madrasi, kill, hit and kill).

Grenadiers Regiment: Motto: Sarvada Shaktishali (Ever Powerful). War Cry: Same as Regimental Motto

Maratha Light Infantry Motto: Duty, Honour, Courage. War Cry: Bol Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Ki Jai (Say Victory To King Shivaji).

Rajputana Rifles: Veer Bhogya Vasundhara (The Brave Enjoy the Earth). War Cry: Raja Ram Chandra Ki Jai (Victory to Raja Ram Chandra). Bole Nara Haidiri Ya Ali.

Rajput Regiment: Motto: Sarvatra Vijay (Victory Everywhere). War Cry: Bol Bajrang Bali Ki Jai (Say Victory to Lord Hanuman).

Jat Regiment: Motto: Sangathan Va Veerta (Unity And Valour). War Cry: Jat Balwan, Jai Bhagwan (Jat is Strong, Victory to God).

Sikh Regiment: Motto: Nischey Kar Apni Jeet Karon (Determined, I am Sure To Win). War Cry: Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akal (He who cries God is Truth, is ever Happy).

Sikh Light Infantry: Motto: Deg Teh Fateh (Prosperity in Peace and Victory in War). War Cry: Same as Sikh Regiment

Dogra Regiment: Motto: Kartavyam Anvatma (Duty Before Death). War Cry: Jawala Mata Ki Jai (Victory to Goddess Jawala).

Garhwal Rifles: Motto: Yudhaya Krit Nischya. War Cry: Badri Vishal Lal Ki Jai (Victory to the Great Lord Badri Nath).

Kumoun Regiment: Motto: Prakramo Vijayate (Valour Triumphs). War Cry: Kalika Mata Ki Jai (Victory to the Great Goddess Kali). Bajrang Bali Ki Jai (Victory to Bajrang Bali). Dada Kishan Ki Jai (Victory to Dada Kishan). Jai Durge Naga.

Assam Regiment: Motto: Assam Vikram (Unique Valor). War Cry: Rhino Charge.

Bihar Regiment: Motto: Karam Hi Dharam (Work is Worship). War Cry: Jai Bajrang Bali (Victory to Bajrang Bali). Birsa Munda Ki Jai (Victory to Birsa Munda).

Mahar Regiment: Motto: Yash Sidhi (Success & Attainment). War Cry: Bolo Hindustan Ki Jai (Say Victory to India).

Jammu and Kashmir Rifles: Motto: Prashata Ranvirta (Valour in Battle is Praiseworthy). War Cry: Durga Mata Ki Jai (Victory to Goddess Durga).

Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry: Motto: Balidanam Vir Lakshanam (Sacrifice is a Sign of the Brave). War Cry: Bharat Mata Ki Jai (Victory to Mother India).

Naga Regiment: War Cry: Jai Durga Naga.

All Gorkha Regiments: War Cry: Ayio Gorkhali (Here Come the Gurkhas).
